This fabulous new collection of stories entitled Men and Horses . . . and the Women Who Love Them was written by women writers and riders and edited by Loren Spiotta-DiMare of Tewksbury, USA.
The theme for the book was inspired by a couple who trailer their horses to Spiotta-DiMare’s stable to take riding lessons. “It was wonderful to watch this husband and wife having fun with their horses together,” she says. “It started me thinking about other women lucky enough to have men in their lives who share their equine passion.”
Thus the idea for Men & Horses was born.
The men in the stories are not only husbands and boyfriends, but dads, grandfathers, sons, brothers and even trainers – any fellow who has a relationship to the woman and her horse(s).
The stories are heartwarming and diverse: the couple who meet on a riding vacation and later marry; the woman whose favorite uncle brought her to the racetrack each summer as a child; the former jockey supported by two male mentors; the founder of an Equine Rescue who was introduced to horses by her grandfather and many more.
“One of my favorites was written by a thirteen-year old girl who writes about how her parents met and fell in love through their involvement with horses.” Spiotta-DiMare says. Most of the contributions are nonfiction but there are a few fictionalized short stories as well.
The theme of the book is captured in the front cover painting of Lt. Robert Marelli, his daughter, Ava and their beloved Thoroughbred, Lieutenant “Lieu.” A former police officer, Lt. Marelli held several positions with the Newark Police Department during his nearly 40 year tenure. He was Supervisor of the Mounted Unit for the last 15. Lieu joined the force as a three-year-old and served as Lt. Marelli’s trusted mount for over decade. Both are retired now and enjoy trail riding though the countryside. Ava shares her Dad’s love of horses and rides Lieu as well. The cover’s pastel painting was created by animal artist, Jerilyn Weber of Flemington (www.jerilynweber.com).
